UBC Founder, Peter G. McGuire

Since 1881

The UBC has been at the forefront of the labour movement, achieving milestones for workers’ rights.

Founded by Peter G. McGuire in 1881, the Carpenters’ Union was one of the first groups of North American tradespeople to unionize in the face of extreme oppression. Their courage and success inspired other workers to organize, and in 1882, the first Canadian Local Union of the UBC was established in Hamilton, Ontario.

In 2017

The National Construction Council was created by the Canadian District of the Carpenters’ Union.

The UBC created NCC to bring even more work and career opportunities to UBC Canada members nation-wide.

Our accelerated growth reflects our determination and success in acquiring projects with traditionally open-shop contractors. This is part of our strategy to grow the union market share across Canada for UBC members.

As a result of this and other disciplined business development strategies, the UBC membership is growing exponentially in Canada without compromising our integrity or commitment to the union workforce.
